The purpose of the Shelbyville Building & Codes Department is to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operation

Every project starts here.

The City of Shelbyville requires building permits for certain projects. The best way to find out if you need a permit is to call our office at (931) 488-4230 and discuss your project with one of our inspectors.

Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, add any pool, deck, arbor, or storage building or to erect, install enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the 2018 International Code, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS IRC R106.1 and IBC 107.1

Submittal documents. Submittal documents consisting of construction documents, and other data shall be submitted in two or more sets with each application for a permit. The construction documents shall be prepared by a registered design professional where required by the statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is to be constructed. Where special conditions exist, the building official is authorized to require additional construction documents to be prepared by a registered design professional.

Other permits may require a site inspection and may take longer to review and approve. We will strive to approve your permit as quickly as possible. Please plan ahead for your permit, some permits require a few days of review prior to issuing a permit. You will find permit applications to the left side of this page.

Common Codes Questions

Codes can be confusing we are here to help make it simple. 

What is an Inoperable Motor Vehicle?

noperable and/or derelict vehicles are prohibited. A vehicle is considered inoperable if a current tag isn’t displayed and/or it is not fully equipped to legally and safely operate on public streets.

Where can I park?

Parking is permitted for passenger cars and motorcycles in residential properties only on a legal driveway or in a garage. You may not park on grass or other surfaces.

Can i store things outside?

Outdoor storage is prohibited. Storing or placing of indoor furniture, household appliances, auto parts, building materials, or any other similar materials is prohibited.

Junk, trash, and debris?

Junk, auto parts, furniture, trash, tires, building materials, cannot be left in the yard and must be properly disposed of.

What are the Yard Maintenance Standards?

Maintenance of yards and swales / right-of-ways abutting property are the responsibility of the property owner. Grass in excess of eight (8) inches in height is prohibited.

What are Illegal Dwelling Units / RV’s / Campers?

Dwelling units, RV’s, campers and similar added to interior/exterior or placed upon property without proper permits are prohibited regardless of the amount of time in place.

Condition of structures?

Any wood, shingles, siding, roof covering, railings, fences, walls, windows, doors, porches, ceilings, screens (if required), and other exterior parts of a structure must be maintained in weather-tight, rodent proof, sound condition and in good repair. Vacant structures must be secured and properly maintained.
