About Willow Mount
Willow Mount Cemetery was established in the mid 1840’s, at a time when the Old City Cemetery was reaching full capacity. The first recorded burial was Frances, infant daughter of James and Catherine M. Wortham, who died October 19, 1844. She was buried on the brow of the hill near the circle drive in range eight. The original survey ran 858 feet east and west.
Nearly six hundred unknown fallen Confederate soldiers rest along the North side of Confederate Lane. The cemetery also has three mass graves from three different cholera out brakes in the 1800s.
The cemetery is over 55 acres and home to more then 30k interred people. Also maintained by the staff at Willow Mount are 5 other cemeteries across the city totaling over 78 acres and 50k interred people.
